Question by Why So Serious?: how can i learn to do all this stuff without going to school for it?
OK… I’m going to school for welding right now (I’m gonna be a boilermaker, they make big $$ and i love welding anyway) but i want to learn all this other stuff cuz it’d be really useful. so here is the list of things i’ve come up with so far:

- CARPENTRY: I was in a cabinet making business for a while and learned that i love carpentry, but without a job in carpentry i really can’t learn much (i quit because i needed money and the business only had good busienss for about half the year and the rest of the time i was left only doing work when they had some for me to do) so i would like to know how i could lear more about it. i dont just man the basic stuff that can be done in most garage shops either.

BLACKSMITHING: I’ve always loved the idea of blacksmithing, and i made a small homemade forge for it and use a piece of train track as an anvil, but i need someone to learn from. For those people who say “who the hell would want to make horse shoes” i agree… but there are tons of other uses for blacksmithing. scroll work and fancy railings, making blades, making your own tools fabricating parts to repair things or make them better (i.e. I am constantly having to weld broken parts on our brush hog because the factory parts are pretty weak for what it has to put up with, but if i could just fabricate a stronger part then problem solved)

PLUMBING: plumbers cost $$ and i dont see the use of hiring them if you can do it yourself. besides that, one of the things i want to do for a few extra bucks on the side is gutting small, cheap houses, crappy and then making em better and selling them and you cant earn money on that if you hrie the work for it.

CONSTRUCTION: This could definately be useful. I could build my own house for one, and build my own shop, probably build a few other thigns to, and besides that i could help friends out with extensions on their houses.

AUTO REPAIR: it’d be really nice to know how to repair cars, and besides tat i would be able to take useless junkers and make new cars out of em (my dad knew a guy who did that and that guy earned a killing off of it as a hobby. he’d take a bunch of junkers that were from the same manufacturer and take the good parts and make a new car out of it and sell it with a list of all the parts in the ewn car. he made something ridiculous like ,000 a car.)

ENGINE REPAIR: This would definately be useful. if something with an engine were to break down it would cost m a lot less money if i could fix it than if i replaced it.

if you have any idea how i can learn any one of those without going to school for it then please tell. and if you have any ideas for anything else i should learn then tell me that, too.

fyi I’ll be able to have a lot of time on my hands with a job in the boilermakers, because they can take as much time as they want between jobs, so time shouldnt be a big problem as logn as i dont have to take a long class/ stay in one area for more than 6 months at a time.
Oh and this one:

HYDRAULICS: I want to know how to build hydraulic pistons etc. so that i dont have to buy em. might not be possible but i think it probably is. I have a lot of ideas for machines using hydraulics

You should get some books on the subjects that interest you. Read up on the how to’s of each one. You could also go to carpenters / car repair people. Volunteer as a extra set of hands if you could shadow them for a bit. They would probably appreciate the free help, and you could pick the brains of people who work on the products. Find forums online and discuss questions with the people there.

Also, practice makes perfect, and if you’re willing to experiment, you’ll probably be able to figure out what to do. I wouldn’t take on any big projects until you have a good understanding though. The thing about fixing up houses would require you to be very knowledable in plumbing/ electrical and construction, and it would have to pass a building inspection before you could actually sell the house, so it’ll have to be up to code.

Here is my situation,

I recently bought a house in my city (September 2008).

I also havea 7,000 student credit line dept (my parents said they will be paying it off for my shortly as a helping hand)
and 2,500 credit card dept (maxed)
500$ cellphone bill.

I was layed my job 3-4 months ago. and have no been able to make morgage payements. collectors started calling, ect but was not able to do anything. i received a paper via mail from the couts saying something about i owe the CIBC (my bank) 108k. i think they are suing me? does that make sense? for not paying my morgage?

What happens now? do they reposes my house?

Ok to continue on, after searching for a job with no avail (huge unnemployement rate in my city) i decided to leave.

Im a 5th year plumber, so i did make good money when was working, but was layed off beause the industry was dead.

So in light of all that i decided to move (loosing house(i think) stress with money and not having it) i sold my things and moved. out west were theyre is work.

now ive found an independant contracting job, but im broke. (flew down here with 200 dollars in my pocket. clothes and tools).

I would need a truck, liabilty insurance, work comp, car insurance. a cell phone.

The job pays VERY VERY well. and is reliable on hours, i will make a killing and able to re-establish myself financially in no time. But i have all this dept and no money.

I’m young, 22 and i have been foolish wiht my money. Now im in a situation and i have no idea how to go about getting out.

Im looking for detailed or any advice i cant get onwhat i should do.

So there some type of loan i can get to merge my current dept.

What do i do about the house, i have been in no contact wiht them at all, and dont know what the process is when you havent and cant pay. Like take the house?? which i dont live there anymore. what happens to the dept? the lawsuit (i think thats what it is)

And how can i get some money to get this buisness going, (independent plumbin contractor). to get myself re-started again. I figuere start up cost will be atleast 15,000$

any help and advice would be helpfull.
Im being hired on at 50/hour, garantee 40 hours a week (most likly will be 60-70). And advancements within 3 months. His other plumber makes 80/hour

First see if you can find a job as a plumber without any cash up front. If business is that good, then you should be able to work for someone else for a while. If you can’t find that type of job, the other one is bogus.

Ask the guy hiring you to hire you hourly instead.

When you get steady work, call all the people you owe and start making payment. Try to get your credit fixed with each of them. Make deals. You will pay them if they help get your credit fixed.

You should always stay in contact with your mortgage company. It’s either near or at the point of foreclosure by now.
I don’t mean to discourage you, but your credit rating has taken a huge hit with being multiple months late on your mortgage. It would be impossible to qualify for K in new credit unless you get a really good co-signer. Regardless of how rosy your current job/earning prospect might be at the moment, creditors aren’t going to care about this.. Can’t you find a job with an established firm without having to get into debt to start your own company?
